AlUla’s desert climate catches people out: strong sun by day, and — from autumn to spring — surprisingly cold nights. Pack for both.

Clothing

  • Layers. Light breathable clothes for the day, plus a warm jacket or fleece for evenings (essential Nov–Feb).
  • Modest, comfortable cuts. Covering shoulders and knees is respectful and practical against the sun; a scarf is useful.
  • Closed walking shoes. The sites are sandy and uneven — sandals are not ideal at the tombs.

Sun & desert protection

  • High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat or head cover — shade is scarce at the tombs.
  • A reusable water bottle; staying hydrated matters even in winter.
  • Lip balm and a little moisturiser — the desert air is very dry.

The things people forget

  • A power bank (long days out, lots of photos).
  • A small torch or headlamp for desert nights and stargazing.
  • Cash for small purchases, though cards are widely accepted.

Frequently asked
What should I wear in AlUla?

Light, modest, comfortable clothing for the day and a warm layer for the evening. Closed shoes are best for the sites.

Is it cold in AlUla at night?

In winter (December–February) desert nights can drop close to freezing, so bring a genuinely warm layer even if the days are mild.
