Hegra is the headline, but AlUla rewards the traveller who stays a little longer. Here are the experiences worth your time — and an honest note on what to skip if you are short on days.

The essentials

  • Hegra — the UNESCO Nabataean tombs. Non-negotiable. See how to visit Hegra.
  • Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil) — a wind-carved monolith, magic at sunset with a cool drink at the sunken lounges.
  • AlUla Old Town — restored mud-brick lanes and a citadel viewpoint; best in late afternoon.
  • Dadan & Jabal Ikmah — the older Dadanite/Lihyanite capital and an open-air “library” of ancient inscriptions.

Worth the extra day

  • Gharameel — a field of sandstone pinnacles, superb for sunset and stargazing.
  • Hot-air balloon at dawn — seasonal, weather-dependent, and unforgettable over the tombs and canyons.
  • Maraya — the world’s largest mirrored building, reflecting the desert; striking from outside, events/dining to go in.
  • Stargazing — AlUla’s dark skies are a genuine draw; a guided desert night is worth it.

What to skip if you are short on time

If you only have two days, prioritise Hegra, the Old Town, Elephant Rock and one desert sunset. Save Gharameel, ballooning and a full Maraya visit for a third day. The full two-day plan is in our AlUla itinerary.
